Müge (Meg) N. Galin’s Bio

Müge (Meg) N. Galin, PhD (English Lit., 1992), works with graduate students and faculty at The Ohio State University (OSU) in Columbus, Ohio, as well as academics and some book authors in other states and abroad. She has taught in the Departments of Comparative Studies, English, and Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at OSU and in the Department of Western Literatures at Bosphorus University (Bogaziçi Üniversitesi) in Istanbul. She has taught composition classes to Honors students at OSU’s Department of English. As a writing instructor and an editor since the early 1990s and a published author herself, Dr. Galin is well equipped to see writers through the numerous stages of writing — from conception to proposal to countless revisions, to completion — of a typescript so that it can find its way in the world of publishing. However, she is not an agent.

Those who have worked on a writing project longterm with Dr. Galin have often remarked that, in addition to serving as an editor, she doubles as a mentor and advisor; writers who have worked with her longterm have come to regard her as their “Writing Coach.” She combines clarity and toughness of mind with a down-to-earth, human touch in helping writers communicate something real and worthwhile, and produce something they can be proud of.

Dr. Galin views writing as scriptotherapy, or as a healing process, an act of courage. She motivates writers to overcome their fear of self-exposure and their obsession with perfection, imparting to them valuable tips and skills for writing clearly, effectively, and with power.

Among Dr. Galin’s own books is Between East and West (SUNY 1997, available at Amazon.com), which examines the influence of the mystical tradition of Sufism on the novels of the British author Doris Lessing. Known for her research in Lessing scholarship, Dr. Galin was invited to write on the occasion of Lessing’s being awarded the 2007 Nobel Prize for Literature (see Doris Lessing: The Sufi Connection, 12 October 2007). Dr. Galin presented papers on Lessing and related topics in the United States and internationally, including her work on Mulla Nasrudin, Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi, as well as on Turkish women who practice Sufi mysticism and who have attained leadership roles within their spiritual Order, defying stereotypes. Another cross-cultural book, Understanding Women (Ohio State University 1992), which she co-edited, focuses on women in the Islamic Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, and women in East Asia. This book is available from OSU’s Department of Comparative Studies. Dr. Galin’s other books include Turkish Sampler: Writings for All Readers (Indiana University 1989) and Fatma Aliye Hanim (Isis 1998).
